In my last post I shared the key lesson I learnt from 2016. My problem last year was that I set too many goals, which meant I couldn’t fully commit to all of them and so ended up failing to achieve them. With that in mind I have decided to focus on a single goal this year. It is the second goal from my ‘I made the decision to try’ blog and it is…
I am going to run the Birmingham Half Marathon in under 90 minutes.
Why this goal? Well I have run the Birmingham Half Marathon several times but I have never been able to break the 90-minute barrier. The race this year is on the 15th October, which means I have nine months to train for it. That sounds like loads of time, however my wife and I are expecting our first child in February so I am anticipating that I won’t have much free time this year.
If I am going to complete this goal I need to train smart and make the most of the free time I will get. I also need to have one single focus and not let myself get distracted by other goals. My plan for this goal is to start from scratch, as if I had never run a 5km let alone a half marathon. That way I can build up my race stamina over a long period of time. I know if I leave it until three months before the race to start training it will be too late to be in the right condition. I am really excited about this challenge and I can’t wait to get back out running again.
The ‘If I have time’ list of things I would like to do this year
Whilst my single focus for 2017 is running the Birmingham Half Marathon in under ninety minutes, I also have some things I would like to do this year. As mentioned previously my wife and I are expecting our first child in February so I am not going to have the luxury of free time this year but I also don’t want to use that as an excuse not do things. So these are my ‘If I have time’ list of things to do:
- Improve my flexibility/mobility – right now I can’t touch my toes, so there is plenty of room for improvement. Also improved flexibility will help with my running.
- Play 8 rounds of golf – Having progressed my golf game in 2016 I don’t want it to go backwards in 2017. I know I am not going to have time to practice or play lots over the next 12 months so if I get in 8 rounds this year I will be delighted!
- Have more fun – I have a tendency to take things way too seriously and in 2017 I am determined to chill out and have more fun.
So that is my single focus for 2017 and three things I would like to achieve if I have time. The truth is that I have no idea what the next 12 months has in store for me but I am certain that 2017 will be a life changing year!
